Our site went down - why?

Hi there,

Our site went down over the weekend. We spoke with our web hosting company, and they said there was a change made at the domain registrar - Homestead. We gave our hosting company our Homestead login, and they were able to login and fix the issue. But, we didnt login and make any changes last week, so how did this happen? Did someone else login to this account? Is there a history of logins in the last couple of weeks?

Thanks for your help

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing the details of your experience. We understand how critical your website is to your business, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption you encountered over the weekend.

After further checking, we can confirm that there has been no recent login activity on your account. The last recorded contact made is on March 18, 2026. What happened is that the DNS records defaulted, which caused the downtime you experienced. This was not the result of any login or manual changes made from your side.

We appreciate that your hosting company was able to log in and assist with restoring the records. Please rest assured that no unauthorized access has been detected on your account.

We recognize the impact this downtime had on your business and value your long‑standing relationship with us. Your feedback is important, and we are reviewing this incident to prevent similar issues in the future.

If you have any further questions or would like to discuss this matter in more detail, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-710-1998.

Thank you again for your patience and for being a valued Homestead customer.

Hi,

Thank you for confirming that there was no unauthorized login activity on the account.

I appreciate the clarification. That said, I would like to better understand how the DNS records defaulted in the first place, as this caused a significant disruption to both our website and email.

Can you please confirm:

  • why the DNS records defaulted
  • whether this can happen again
  • whether there is any way to lock or protect the DNS settings from reverting
  • whether you have a record or backup of the previous DNS settings on file

We would like to make sure this does not happen again.

Thank you,
Lucy
