never got an answer to this question
once you uploaded a photo onto a page, do you need to keep the photo file on the website? does the image on the page point back to the file? if you delete the file, does it delete the image off the page?
it was suggested that I delete "un-needed files"

To display a picture it must be on the website. So if you deleted the file, there is nothing to display.
