How do I change the ownership of my website?

The previous owners had originally set up this website.  I purchased this business and the website came with the business.  Now I need to change the ownership on it but how do I do that?

Changing the ownership of a Homestead website requires contacting their support team to process the transfer and then manually handing over the website files and third-party account details. There is no automatic, self-service option for a complete website transfer from one user account to another.
Step 1: Contact Homestead support
Since the website files cannot be automatically transferred between accounts, you will need to contact Homestead support directly to request the process. A representative will verify both your account and the new owner's account before the transfer is initiated.
  • Phone support: 1-800-710-1998 (for U.S. and Canada).
  • Specify what you need: Tell the agent that you need to transfer a website from your account to another Homestead account.
  • Note the fee: Homestead charges a one-time fee to duplicate a site to a new customer's account. In 2019, this fee was reported to be $50.
Step 2: Prepare the domain for transfer
If the domain for your website is registered with Homestead, you must take additional steps to transfer it to the new owner, who may choose to keep it with Homestead or move it to a different provider.
If transferring the domain to a different provider:
  • Log in to your Homestead account.
  • Go to the "Domains" section and find your domain name.
  • Unlock the domain.
  • Disable domain privacy.
  • Verify the administrative email is set to an address you can access. An authorization code will be sent to this email.
  • Request the authorization code (EPP code or domain password) and send it to the new owner.
  • The new provider can then use this code to initiate the domain transfer.
If keeping the domain with Homestead:
  • You and the new owner should work with the Homestead support agent to ensure the domain and website are properly connected to their new account.
Step 3: Provide third-party credentials and files
Many websites use third-party services for analytics, marketing, and other features. A successful transfer involves moving control of these services and any associated files to the new owner.
  • List all third-party services: This could include Google Analytics, email marketing tools, or other integrations.
  • Hand over login credentials or transfer ownership within each service. For example, you can transfer ownership of a Google Analytics web property without handing over your entire Google account.
  • Transfer files: Send the new owner any custom files related to the website, such as image assets, logos, and style guides.
Step 4: Finalize the handover
After working with Homestead and completing the steps above, you should confirm with the new owner that they have full control of the website.
  • Ensure the new owner has access to the new Homestead account and has changed the password.
  • Confirm they have all necessary credentials for third-party services and website files.
  • Consider documenting all login information and transferred assets in a secure, shared document.
