Verify LetsEncrypt SSL

I am trying to verify my site's SSL cert through LetsEncrypt. I need to add a CNAME record with the "host" set to _acme-challenge. Homestead is throwing an error, saying it's an invalid hostname. My hunch is that the underscore is throwing it off, but it is needed for verification. This is the only platform where I've ever run into this issue.
Does anyone know of a workaround? Thanks!
