Nameservers after transfer

Hi, I am currently hosted through homestead.  The 2 nameservers are at homestead.com.  I would like to transfer to a different host.  Once I begin the transfer, will the homestead nameservers continue to function or are these nameservers default nameservers (they will stop function the second I transfer?)?
