DNS Resolution Error 1001

I am building a new website for my domain  www.pngpoly.com

My original website was built using the old Sitebuilder app.  I have deleted it and all the other alternate pages/sites for that domain, and I am now working with the new Website Builder program you offer.

After making the header I saved and published it, but when I go to the actual domain (www.pngpoly.com) I get a DNS Resolution error 1001.

I can see the page at the www.pngpoly.homesteadcloud.com  and I am still sending and receiving email.

Can you tell me what to do to resolve this. I am not familiar with DNS settings and don't want to make a mess of them.

You're getting a message that your site is not secure or 1001 error code.

Did you recently add Cloudflare? Most likely, you tried to add Cloudflare to secure your website and you've failed to set up the DNS record as directed. Review the platform options below and review your installation to ensure it's correct.

If you're having trouble with the Cloudflare setup, you can always call for assistance at 1-800-710-1998.

Hi Russ,   I didnt try to set up cloudflare,  I actually don't even know what that is.   Unless Website builder or Homestead tried to set it up automatically when I was making the new website.

I did see that link, and I followed it, but got a failure message that the certificate cant be issued because even after entering the new IP it is apparently wrong.

I have this exact same thing with my website www.westerngolf.org.  My URL was pointed to my old Sitebuilder site, I have built a new site on Homesteadcloud, reassigned the URL to this new site, and 12 hours later I'm getting this exact DNS error. As Brendan said, I have not added any cloudflare services/security, just reassigned the URL from one Homestead site to another.

UPDATE: @russell5607  I just found this post https://community.homestead.com/conversations/websitebuilder/websitebuilder-ssl/5f2a9b3158180958845dab29 and followed the instructions - it's the 'next steps' based on the URL @brendan0205 provided - and it appears to have worked (now have to wait for the ssl cert to propagate).

Hi @russell5607  I have tried that.  Its been weeks and no luck getting it to work.  This does seem very typical of Homesteads rubbish systems.

Hello Brendan,

Since your nameservers are pointing to Cloudflare, I cannot troubleshoot the SSL set up. Can you send me a screenshot of your DNS from within your Cloudflare account?

I am also having this issue, though I've gone through the SSL certificate and it was successful. I've updated the DNS records as part of the SSL certificate instructions. What am I missing? The URL is clairefadden.com

@claire5969 I'm getting this message: Did you follow the thread using the link at the bottom of the message?

You've requested a page on a website (clairefadden.com) that is on the Cloudflare network. Cloudflare is currently unable to resolve your requested domain (clairefadden.com). There are two potential causes of this:

  • Most likely: if the owner just signed up for Cloudflare it can take a few minutes for the website's information to be distributed to our global network.
  • Less likely: something is wrong with this site's configuration. Usually this happens when accounts have been signed up with a partner organization (e.g., a hosting provider) and the provider's DNS fails.

Please see https://developers.cloudflare.com/support/troubleshooting/http-status-codes/cloudflare-1xxx-errors/error-1001/ for more details.

I saw that message in another post, followed the link, and nothing in that troubleshooting guide makes sense. What is a Cloudflare domain? How am I supposed to know if mine is a Cloudflare domain? I have had my domain through Homestead for years. If Homestead is now the same as Cloudflare, then maybe you all should make that clearer to those of us who haven't just joined.

I just redesigned my site with the new website builder and followed all the instructions to point the domain to the new site. Then it broke. I got the message about needing SSL, so I went to homesteadssl.com and got an SSL certificate. I waited the maximum amount of time it said it could take. And I'm still getting an error. Telling me that it's a Cloudflare issue (when as far as I'm concerned, I have nothing to do with Cloudflare because it all seems to be behind the scenes) with no other information is not at all helpful.

When attempting to logon, did you got a message that your site is not secure or 1001 error code.

You recently added Cloudflare. Most likely, you tried to add Cloudflare to secure your website and you've failed to set up the DNS record as directed. Review the platform options below and review your installation to ensure it's correct.

Make your Websitebuilder website secure?
Follow the steps: https://homesteadssl.com/. If you're having trouble with the Cloudflare setup, you can always call for assistance at 1-800-710-1998.

Google "Cloudflare":

Cloudflare is a global cloud platform that offers a wide range of network services, including security, performance optimization, and developer tools. It acts as a reverse proxy, content delivery network (CDN), and security provider, helping businesses enhance their online presence and protect their assets.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Security: Cloudflare protects websites and applications from various threats, including DDoS attacksmalicious bots, and other cyber threats.
Performance: Cloudflare's CDN distributes website content across a global network of servers, ensuring faster loading times and a better user experience.
Reliability: Cloudflare's infrastructure is designed to be highly reliable and resilient, minimizing downtime and ensuring continuous service.
Developer Services: Cloudflare offers a variety of developer tools, including a serverless platform called Cloudflare Workers, allowing developers to build and deploy applications on Cloudflare's infrastructure.
Other Services: Cloudflare also provides services like DNS (Domain Name Service), SSL/TLS certificates, and email security.

I have completed that step, as I stated in my original post. Just to be sure, I went to the homesteadssl.com site again, and got this message.

This is the same message I got last week, and I gave it 48 hours to propagate. I am still getting this error. I know how DNS records work and how propagation happens. I have changed DNS records with other website platforms with less trouble.

@claire5969  unfortunately Russell is more harm than good on this community platform.  He offers almost no useful advice and then tells you to call support.   After dealing with him I have decided to shift my websites to another hosting platform that actually has a Tech support (not a community of equally confused people trying to help each other).  I would suggest that you repost your last message and include @elyzabethv  she seems to have actual access into the homestead system.  I wasn't even getting an SSL certificate and she took care of the "error".

What is Russel not telling you?   It appears that homestead has done a deal with Cloudflare to automatically sign up our website/domains for a cloudflare account without our knowledge as part of the new website building app.

I went as far as completing the cloudflare free account login, then changing all my DNS and Cname details.  And it still didnt work.    I then undid everything, deleting my cloudflare account and changing all me DNS and name server settings back to homesteads.  Fortunately my email stopped working due to the changes and while fixing that DNS address problem I found that the original DNS settings were incorrect.

Then @elyzabeth came along and told me she fixed the SSL problem, and everything miraculously started working.  Keep in mind that she told me it was fixed twice, and once it was not fixed at all.

Anyway,  Im not sure if it will help, but it seems you do not need any of the cloudflare stuff at all, you just need to check the DNS settings.    I have attached mine.

NOTE:  I AM NOT TECH SUPPORT,  YOU MUST TAKE A SCREEN SHOT OF YOUR OLD SETTINGS SO THAT YOU CAN PUT THEM BACK IN IF CHANGING THEM DOESNT WORK.  I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR TRYING TO HELP.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, all my DNS ips are identical to yours and I'm still getting the error. I appreciate your help. I am going to call support, if only because the site has been down for 5 days now and I need it back up asap. I would have called them on Saturday but, you know... websites only go down between business hours on weekdays. Sigh.
