Backup Webmaster

I have been the first and only webmaster for my social club for several years, designing and developing our website from scratch with no help, or cost to the club.

There have been concerns expressed that I should have a backup, and one Executive member proposes I give him access to my account so he can make update changes (or indeed take over) if I am indisposed.

I do not feel comfortable sharing access to my Homestead account - even if it is permitted by Homestead - as I have several other client websites also.

If allowed, would there be a separate fee to pay?

He would have a long learning period on programming as he has no experience, he thinks it is easy.

My club is able to open a FREE Google Sites account, and I recommended he goes that route, learn how to use the software and develop his own website from scratch, rather than learn on my website and perhaps mess it up.

What advice would you have to give me please.

Homestead websites operate from the cloud. You have access to them through the Homestead portal. There's no backing up. You can share your account by giving your partner your logon credentials. You can add as many websites as you want. You can create as many domain names as you want. You just add them to your plan.

Thanks for your comments Russell but they do not address my main concern, I have several private other websites on my account that I pay for myself, and I do not feel comfortable allowing another access to my account. If he opens a Homestead account and pays for it, is there a way that the club's website can be copied over to give him access to it, for his own maintance, and I can then delete if from my account.

Far simpler, he opens the FREE Google Sites himself. The learning curve will be easier for him doing it from scratch, rather than learning Homestead and also having to understand and navigate my own programming. Am I making sense?

I have allowed a very few people access to my account over these many years. It was always a messy process and you run the risk of him messing up something in your other accounts/sites. There is no "individual access" with Homestead AND there is no way to move an icloud Website Builder site into an "new account" Having him test the waters with setting up a new site with the google free thing might give him a lesson on how he will NOT want to be your "back up" guy. It's always the ones who you are doing favors for that are the most problems, eh?

Lynn, your comments are appreciated and they are spot on to what I feel may happen if I give him access to my account. Apart from anything else, is that legal anyway and against Homestead's rules? I think I will hang firm and let him get his feet wet (test the waters as you say) on the Google freebie and he will appreciate that while it is not rocket science, it is certainly quite a learning curve to get reasonably comfortable.
