A little more flexibility with Catalogue categories

I would like to be able to specify one or more categories for my store layout (product list mode).  Currently, the Advanced setting allows you to select a single category only.  I would like to specify one or more categories for, and when I do, then the filter section shows those categories only.  I would also like to have more choices for category styles.  Categories should have an advanced button, to allow me to orient the categories horizontally, or vertically, add an associated image, and hover-over text that I am able to edit. 

1. better filtering of products by category.

2. better customization of the category styles.
