Per Google:

A 522 error, also known as "Connection timed out," indicates that the web server is not responding to requests from Cloudflare. This often occurs when Cloudflare, a CDN (Content Delivery Network), tries to connect to your website's origin server, but the server doesn't respond within the expected timeframe.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
    • Cloudflare as a Proxy:
Cloudflare acts as a proxy between users and your website's server.
    • Connection Timeout:
When a user tries to access your site, Cloudflare first contacts your server to retrieve the requested content.
  • No Response:
If the server doesn't respond to Cloudflare's connection request within a specific time (usually a few seconds), Cloudflare will return a 522 error to the user.
  • Causes:
This can happen due to several reasons, including:
  • The web server being offline or overloaded.
  • Firewall or security settings blocking Cloudflare's requests.
  • Incorrect DNS settings or routing.
  • Slow server response times.
  • Troubleshooting:
    Common solutions involve:
  • Verifying the web server is online and functioning correctly.
  • Checking firewall rules to ensure Cloudflare's IP addresses are not blocked.
  • Ensuring correct DNS settings.
  • Optimizing server performance to handle traffic.

@russell5607  Thanks for response, but I'm not capable of back tracking to check the trouble shooting steps. Appears the web server is functioning.  But I don't know how to check the firewall rules, dns settings if correct, or how to optimize servicer performance.  I wish I could just turn off the cloudflare for now, but don't know how to go about going back to that either.  Does Homestead help with these issues?

Most likely, while trying to add Cloudflare to secure your website, you've failed to set up the DNS record as directed. Review the platform options below and review your installation to ensure it's correct.
